There and Back Again – Daniel Brantley Engraved in History
by Brian J Barnes, Partner
It has now been recorded in History that on the 18th day of December, 2017 the island of Nevis adopted the theme “Celebrating the past while embracing the future” from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. This event coincided with the election of the Honourable Mark A.G. Brantley, then Deputy Premier of Nevis and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation for the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis as the 4th Premier of Nevis in a landslide victory.
As a Senior Partner of Daniel Brantley, the Honourable Mark A.G. Brantley is following in the footsteps of the late Right Excellent Sir Simeon Daniel his mentor, the founding Partner of Daniel Brantley, the first Premier of the island of Nevis and, a Federal Minister of the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis.
The swearing-in of the Honourable Mark A.G. Brantley on the 19th day of December, 2017 as the 4th Premier of Nevis is historic for a number of reasons. He is the first Premier to originate from the parish of Saint John. He is the first Premier to hold the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation in the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis. He is also the first Premier to be associated with a law firm where both Senior Partners have been elected Premiers of Nevis.
When people refer to Daniel Brantley, they must now indicate in what context they are using the name. They may now be referring to the premier full-service law firm located in St. Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla that has been providing high quality legal services promptly, skillfully and professionally to domestic, regional and international clients with collective experience of more than 30 years.
On the other hand, they could be referring to the Premiers of Nevis themselves. Either way, the reference to Daniel Brantley is now a matter of history and a challenge to the age-old statement that lightning never strikes the same place twice.
Premier Brantley, fondly referred to as “the President Obama of the Caribbean” has ushered in a new political era in Nevis.
Congratulations are in order for Premier Brantley. May his government follow the leading of God, demonstrate the wisdom of Solomon and embrace the patience of Job.
